Week of 03.02.20

Dear Westlake Parents and Guardians:

This past week was an awesome week of music concerts!  Our students displayed their performance skills in orchestra, band, and choir and demonstrated how much they’ve grown in their musical accomplishments.  It is always a wonderful experience to hear students at the beginning of the year just learning to play an instrument or use their voice along with their classmates to make harmony and then hear them again about two-thirds through the year.  I’m always blown away by how much change there is and the accomplishments our students make.

Thank you for the gift of your children!  We are so grateful at Westlake to be a part of the lives of your children and your families.  We are thankful for our school community!

Week of 02.24.20

Westlake Parents and Guardians:

I was recently doing some reading about leadership and found an interesting TedTalk on the topic of self-leadership.  The idea is similar to the concept of putting one’s oxygen mask on before helping someone else with their’s in that in order to best lead others one must understand themselves first.  There were three tenets that were mentioned in this TedTalk on self-leadership that I thought any parent/guardian could understand and apply themselves:

  • Self-awareness
  • Self-reflection
  • Self-regulation

While all of these tenets resonated with me as I think about my own leadership role as a principal and a parent the one that really stood out to me was self-regulation.  Part of self-regulation is reframing issues that come up in order to determine the best course of action for one’s self and others.  I know I sometimes (often) react too quickly to things as a mom and only after the fact see a better path once I’ve taken time to understand my emotion and see clearly the issue.  Self-regulation is a valuable skill to ensure I can offer my best self to those around me.

Join Westlake and the PTO for the Dine-out this week!

Save the Date:  Our last Westlake Dine-Out night of the year will be at Your Pie on Tuesday, February 25 from 5-9pm.  No need to show a flyer or mention Westlake – 15% of all sales that night will go to our school.  Your Pie is located at 14342 Lincoln St, Thornton, CO, 80023.  Hope to see you there!

New Share Table in the Cafeteria

We are reaching out to let you know about something new in our school lunchroom.  Starting Wednesday, February 19th, we will have a Share Table available for students in the cafeteria.  The share table is for students who participate in the school lunch or breakfast program. Students can place whole fruit and unopened, packaged items on this table that they are not able to eat or that they don’t want to take with them. The share table will be located in the cafeteria and the food items will be available for other students to take at no cost.  This resource helps in two ways: 1) reduces the amount of food thrown away and eventually put in the landfill and 2) provides additional nutrients to other students. We are excited to provide this opportunity to our school community!

If after finishing their breakfast or lunch your child wants more to eat, we invite you to encourage them to check the share table for items they may enjoy.  Due to allergy and food safety concerns, the share table can only be used to share items from the school meal program. Foods brought from home cannot be placed on the share table. Items with opened packages or partially eaten food products are also not allowed on the share table. If your child has a food allergy, we encourage you to talk to your child about the allergy and whether you would like them to utilize this new resource.

We want to avoid students taking extra food from the line for the purpose of sharing at the share table.  We ask that you talk to your child about the importance of sharing, but remind them to only take what they can eat.

We hope that you will talk to your student(s) about our new share table. If you have any feedback, questions or concerns about the new share table, please contact me at 720-972-4194.

Week of 02.16.20

Dear Westlake Parents and Guardians:

This week is the official Random Acts of Kindness Week!  Schools, workplaces, homes, and communities can come together to “make kindness the norm.”  Let’s band together to in our school community with ideas around kindness during this week.  Click HERE for some inspiration.

JA Finance Park for WLMS 8th Graders March 9th, 10th and 13th Parent Volunteers Needed!

JA Finance Park is an experiential opportunity that all Adams 12 8thgraders participate in during the spring semester. We host the students at the American Furniture Warehouse in Thornton after they have completed lessons in the classroom that relate to personal financial literacy. What we do during the field trip is throw students into the middle of an adult life and ask them to financially survive a month of being an adult. This is accomplished by assigning students a random life scenario (spouse, kids, job, debt) on an tablet. The tablet walks them through paying taxes, setting up a budget and making shopping choices while trying to stick to that budget.

The volunteers role is to assist and answer questions about why adults make certain decisions, what is a need versus a want, and why making a budget – AND sticking to it – is so important. The volunteer is trained prior to student arrival so there is no prep work and the only background knowledge they would need is the life skills we as

adults may have had to learn the hard way: bill paying, credit card debt, making good shopping choices, etc.. This is a great opportunity to open the door to financial discussions with your student and helping them make better financial decisions early enough to make a difference (love that compound interest!).

Click HERE for a flyer with more info.

Click HERE if you’re ready to volunteer!

Book Adoption for 8th Grade

8th grade language arts teachers are looking to get The List board approved for the middle school level. The List, by Patricia Forde, received a notable award from the American Library Association.

The List is about a dystopian novel exploring both our treatment of the environment and our use of language. After a second great flood, Noa establishes a community called Ark. Noa believes language is the root of all evil and restricts Ark residents to 500 words. Letta, the protagonist, is the wordsmith’s apprentice. Letta’s journey forces her to question Noa’s teachings as she encounters people from other communities who live, speak, and believe contrary to what Noa teaches.

8th grade language arts teachers would like to use this book to help students study themes rendered new, symbols, and motifs. 8th grade students will write a literary analysis of The List as a culminating assessment of our fourth unit of study.

The book is available in the Westlake main office for community members to view.

State Standardized Testing Coming Soon!

CMAS testing is coming up in April. These assessments are an important way for us to get information about how our students are learning and meeting state standards.

  • 7th grade Social Studies testing will be on April 21st through the 22nd.

We ask that you please keep these dates in mind when scheduling any appointments that might keep your student out of school. Help us serve you better | Take the annual Family-School Relationships Survey

In an effort to help us continually elevate your child’s educational experience, I encourage you to take our annual Family-School Relationships Survey! The survey is specific for our school and will help us know where we are succeeding and where we can improve.

Why is the survey important and what do we do with the data? Watch as principals from across our district explain what the survey means for their school community.

Take the 2019-20 Family-School Relationships Survey by Clicking HERE to access the survey

  • The survey is open from Jan. 27 to Feb. 19, 2020 and is completely anonymous.
  • The survey is expected to take between 5-10 minutes and can be taken in English, Spanish or nine other languages on your smartphone, tablet, computer or via paper (talk with your school office for a paper copy).
  • If you have children at different schools, we encourage you to fill out a survey for each school.
  • Survey data is benchmarked nationally and compared to the Five Star staff and student survey to create a comprehensive understanding of the school’s culture and climate. Survey results will be made available to families by the end of the school year.

Thank you in advance for taking this important survey as we work together to continue to elevate the way we serve your child in every classroom, every day.

Please welcome Janet Salas to our Westlake school community!  Ms. Salas started with us in January so you may have already had the opportunity to meet her.  She has been an excellent addition to our team and we are so glad to have her at Westlake!
