Week of 04.29.19

Dear Westlake Parents and Guardians:

We are in the final weeks of school which is so hard to believe!  There are many exciting events coming up including the Color Fun Run!  If your child isn’t registered yet please consider getting them registered as this event is a great deal of fun.  Last year I so enjoyed watching and engaging in the color blasts and just enjoying the fun of the event!  This is a fundraising event which goes to supporting technology replacement and improvement at our school.  We are so grateful for our PTO in putting on this event and supporting our school.  It makes a difference in the lives our students!

Check out this video of last year’s event!

Dear Westlake Parents and Guardians:

Did you know that Westlake students recently partnered with artist Michael Gadlin on designing and creating a new mural?  Thanks to Think 360 we received a grant and got connected with Michael to support students throughout this amazing project.  This project also was recently featured in the Broomfield Enterprise.  I enjoyed how, each day, a new element of the mural took shape and watching students across our building enjoying seeing this artwork come to life.  I even got an invite from our students to do a little painting myself!

Check out the photos below for the before and after pictures and consider coming by the school to see this work of art yourself!

Student ID’s Reminder

For the safety of all our students and staff at Westlake I wanted to take a moment to remind our school community that at Westlake we wear ID’s on lanyards everyday.  This practice allows us to quickly see if there is an individual who is not a student, staff member, or visitor that is supposed to be on our campus.  Students received a school issued lanyard at the beginning of the school year which they

can wear or they may choose to wear a school appropriate lanyard of their choice.  We ask that students wear the lanyard around their necks and not stick the ID’s in their pockets.  ID’s in pockets are not visible and we’re unable to easily see if a student or adult is meant to be on our campus.   Please see the snapshot below of the ID policy taken from our Student Handbook.  If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to the school.

Dear Westlake Parents and Guardians:

I’m always looking for ways to be a better, more informed parent especially when it comes to technology.  I don’t know about your households, but Netflix is a bit of a staple in mine.  While I really enjoy the programming available on Netflix not all of it is appropriate for the various ages of kids in my household.  I came across this article about parental controls on Netflix from Common Sense Media and wanted to share it with you.  While you’re looking at this article check out the vast amount of resources available for parents!

Week of 04.08.19

Dear Westlake Parents and Guardians:

It has been wonderful week back with students from Spring Break!  There are so many exciting events coming up through these last weeks of school and we cherish getting to spend them with your children.

We are committed to our mission at Westlake, “The relentless pursuit of learning for ALL students and staff.”  Because of this commitment we are making some changes to the office in order make the space and work more effective and efficient so the the administrators can dedicate more time in the classrooms with students and teachers focused on teaching and learning.

We ask that in order to help us commit more time to our children in the classroom with their learning that if you need to speak or meet with an administrator on a non-emergency issue please make an appointment.  If there is an emergency the office staff will locate one of the administrators in order to support the need immediately.  Scheduling our time both to meet the needs of parents/guardians as well as the needs of the teaching and learning in classrooms will help us make our school vision, “Igniting a passion for learning and service: Dream, Risk, Achieve!” a reality.

If you have any questions about the adjustments we are making to better our school community please feel free to reach out to me.

King Soopers Card Changes

As some of you may have heard, the King Soopers Gift Card Community Fundraiser program has ended in its current form as of April 1st. The good news is they have made it even easier for Westlake to earn! All you have to do is log into your King Soopers account online (use the membership number on the back of your card) and go to Community Rewards Program. You can search for Westlake Middle School or just type in our enrollment code IK890 and submit. We start earning rebates every time you swipe your King Soopers Card, or make an online purchase starting today! Follow the links below for more information.

If you have money loaded on a King Soopers gift card, you can still use it. Westlake already earned a rebate when you loaded the money on. Nothing else you load on the card going forward will go to the school.

New STEM and Sailing Club @ Westlake!

Westlake is welcoming a new club for students at Westlake.  We have partnered with Community Sailing to provide students the opportunity to learn about the science behind sailing and then get a chance to get out on the water at Boulder Reservoir.  The club will meet at Westlake on Mondays starting on April 22nd from 4pm-5pm.  There is a $15 fee for this club, however, we can help with the cost if there is a need.  Please stop by the office for a flyer or reach out to Dr. Heide with questions.
